IUD

IUD

Interuterine device (IUD)

An intrauterine contraceptive device (IUD) is a small device, which is fitted inside the uterus, for a prolonged period of time.

The two main types of IUDs available in the market in Australia is the Multiload IUD (non-hormonal) and Mirena IUD (hormonal-progesterone impregnated). These devices can usually be inserted in the uterus under a local anaesthetic.

However, in some patients this is not a safe option and a general anaesthetic may be required. For more information see your local doctor or Dr Miriam will be happy to assist you with it.

Gynaecological Procedures

Gynaecological Procedures Performed by Dr. Miriam

Hysterectomy

Hysterectomy is a surgical procedure to remove the uterus and cervix . Unless indicated by your Specialist, the ovaries will be left in place but the fallopian tubes are usually removed.

With removal of the uterus only, menopause does not occur.

The ovaries must be removed for menopause to occur if this has not already happened.

Your Specialist may discuss the need for hormone replacement therapy only if the ovaries are to be removed.

Vaginal Pessary

A vaginal pessary is a silicone device that fits into your vagina to help support your uterus (womb), vagina, bladder or rectum. Prolapse means that your vagina/uterus drops or sags into the vaginal canal because the muscles and ligaments that should support it are weak. Prolapse of the uterus or vaginal can be treated by surgery or use of a vaginal pessary.

IUD

IUD’s stands for Intrauterine Contraceptive Devices

An intrauterine contraceptive device (IUD) is a small device, which is fitted inside the uterus, for a prolonged period of time. Insertion of Hormonal IUD and Non hormonal IUD’s can usually be inserted in the uterus under a local anaesthetic.

However, in some patients this is not a safe option and a general anaesthetic may be required.

Laparoscopy

A laparoscopy is a procedure that allows a surgeon to look at the abdomen and pelvis for diagnosis or treatment (or both) of a number of different disease and conditions. The advantage of a laparoscopy is that only a small incision is required and this why a laparoscopy is known as ‘keyhole surgery’.

Novasure Endometrial Ablation

This procedure is designed to remove just the uterine lining – the endometrium – which is the part of your body that can cause heavy bleeding. No incisions are required, leaving your uterus intact.

TVT – Tensionfree Vaginal Tape

TVT is a tape used to support the urethral tube to treat stress urinary incontinence. This type of incontinence occurs with any movement that raises your abdominal pressure e.g skipping and coughing. The tape is inserted through the vaginal under general anaesthetics.

Hysteroscopy

Hysteroscopy is a procedure that allows a Gynaecologist to see the inside of the uterus (womb). This can be used for diagnosis or treatment of various conditions of the uterus. No incisions are necessary.

Colposcopy

Colposcopy is a procedure that uses a special microscope (called a colposcope) to look into the vagina and to look very closely at the cervix (the opening to the uterus). This is done when a woman has an abnormal pap smear test or if during a pelvic examination the cervix, vaginal or vulva looks abnormal to the doctor.

Lletz Colposcopy

Lletz stands for large loop excision of the transformation zone. The procedure removes a small segment of the cervix  (the lower part of the uterus). This procedure is performed for the diagnosis and treatment of pre-cancerous cells of the cervix.
